Math

Our online Math program for children supports both mathematical understanding and English language development. Designed especially for young EAL learners, our interactive lessons use visuals, simple language, and real-world examples to make math accessible and fun. We help children build confidence in math concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions, while also strengthening their English vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills through engaging activities.

Weekly Structure:

  • Lessons blend concept teaching, math vocabulary building, and practical communication in English.

  • Focus on clear explanations, scaffolding language, and using visual and physical aids.

Session 1: Concept Building + Language Focus

  • Focus:

    • Introduce a math concept and the English words/phrases needed to understand it.

    • Practice solving math problems with support.

  • Language Support:

    • Pre-teach key math vocabulary with pictures and gestures (e.g., “add, subtract, total, equal, more than, less than”).

    • Use sentence starters (e.g., “The answer is…” / “I added…”).

    • Encourage students to repeat and use target words in context.

  • Activities:

    • Read aloud a simple math story that introduces the concept and vocabulary.

    • Show examples using real objects and a shared whiteboard.

    • Practice solving problems with teacher guidance.

  • Examples:

    • Week 1: Counting & place value — numbers 1–100, “ones,” “tens,” “hundreds.”

    • Week 2: Addition & subtraction — “plus,” “minus,” “equals.”

    • Week 3: Multiplication — “groups of,” “times,” “altogether.”

    • Week 4: Fractions — “half,” “quarter,” “whole,” “part.”

Session 2: Application, Speaking & Games

  • Focus:

    • Use math and English in real-world contexts.

    • Practice speaking and listening while solving problems.

  • Language Support:

    • Pair or group work to talk through solutions using full sentences.

    • Encourage asking and answering questions in English.

    • Use games that reinforce both math and language.

  • Activities:

    • Math Bingo, matching games, or online puzzles using vocabulary.

    • Word problems — teacher reads and students act out or solve.

    • Role-plays — e.g., “shopping” with pretend money.

    • Drawing and labeling math problems (e.g., “3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples”).

  • Examples:

    • Week 1: Describe numbers and objects in the room.

    • Week 2: Play a shopping game practicing “how much?” “I have…” etc.

    • Week 3: Make and describe arrays for multiplication.

    • Week 4: Create a pizza or pie chart and explain it in English.

Monthly Project Idea:

  • At the end of each month, students present a small project that combines math and English:

    • Example: “My Favorite Number” — students say and write why, show it visually.

    • Example: “Math Around Me” — take or draw pictures of math in daily life and describe it in English.

    • Example: “My Math Story” — create a short story or comic involving math problems and solutions.

Why This Works:

  • Builds math understanding and English at the same time.

  • Supports EAL learners with scaffolding, repetition, and visuals.

  • Builds confidence in speaking English about mathematical ideas.

  • Interactive and fun so learners stay engaged online.
